The Aztec sunstone is a development of the Mayan calendar which is pre-Columbian, and at the very least Olmec.
It records perpetual cycles based particularly on the sun, moon, and Venus eclipses and features the number zero depicted as a flower or a seashell.
Rather than meaning nothing or something empty, as the placenta or 'origin of being', it alludes to our infinite creation via the spiral of time.
So at the deepest level, besides simply measuring time, a calendar marks our infinity - the perpetual lifecycles and those of the cosmos through which we are born, die and recreate ourselves.
And because every day is a spiritual force already within us, when we use and harness that dynamic momentum, life never ends and we quite literally, change history and the universe.

The Aztec sunstone depicts 5 suns or eras, each of which end with the destruction and then the recreation of the world and humanity.
It also features 2 fire serpents and a massive face at the centre whose identity is contested. This may be Tonatiuh, Aztec deity of the sun or perhaps Tlaltecuhtli, a hybrid earth monster who regularly required human sacrifices.
Besides marking solar time, this scuplture was undoubtedly a political device by which the Aztec elite linked violence, warfare and bloodshed with cosmic cycles and overarching deities to control the population.
However, the Aztec calendar was also an adaptation of a more naturalistic Mayan calendar comprising a 365-day agricultural and 260-day sacred calendar as exemplified by the Temple of Kukulcán at Chichén Itzá.
This pyramid symbolises the 4 directional divisions of the universe and the 365-day year via 4 very precisely calibrated stairways, each with 91 steps and a platform at the top.
At the Spring and Autumn equinoxes, a series of triangular shadows fell from the NW corner of the pyramid casting a snake of light down the 9 stone steps - as if descending into the 9 levels of underworld.
And, at the second level of the pyramid is a red jaguar, the guardian of the 4 corners of the cosmos and the very origins of life ... 2 snakes intertwined, rising from a sacred water-flower.
